  • All stocks at Bloomington (including stocks not yet on Flybase) are here.
  • Bloomington stock subtypes are all listed here, including RNAi lines distinct from the VDRC stocks.
  • Bloomington does not ship during the second half of December.

WellGenetics#

  • When sending flies to WellGenetics, you’ll need  get a Taiwan import permit from them and then attach it to your shipping package.

  • Update the shipping address on checkout! It does not populate properly by default.

  • DO NOT use the HHMI card! International charges are not allowed. If you want to use HHMI funds reach out to our current science ops contact (as of 10/2023 this is Cindy Truong).
  • You can pay using the HMS P-card; VDRC will need to know the last 4 digits of the SSN for the P-Card (4990)
  • importation requires a USDA shipping label and a USDA “letter of no jurisdiction - see below

Importation#

You’ll need to deal with importation paperwork if you’re requesting flies from any source outside the US (whether VDRC, DGRC, or an individual lab outside the US). To import Drosophila melanogaster that harbor only “routine” transgenic constructs, we no longer need a permit. However, we need to supply a “Letter of No Permit Required” (LONPR) from the USDA. Please email thie letter to the sender/vendor so they can print it out and include it with the shipment.

📎 Wilson_LONPR.pdf

For “non-routine” transgenic constructs, the LONPR would not be appropriate: here we would need to apply for a permit from the USDA to import. Non-routine transgenic constructs are defined as follows:

  • Strains carrying transgenic microorganisms causing plant diseases or used for biocontrol of plant pests
  • Strains with select agent sequences. According to the BDSC, no flies have been documented that would fit into this category.
  • Strains where the introduced genetic material is designed to propagate through a population by biasing the inheritance rate. These are generally strains related to gene drive experiments.

Our lab has never used one of these non-routine transgenic constructs, but if you are considering using something like this, please talk to Rachel
