Download Sources#
FAS#
If you are an FAS affiliate (via status as graduate student, professor, or teaching assistant) you can download software from the expansive list on the FAS IT website downloads.fas.harvard.edu/download.
HMS#
If you are an HMS affiliate (postdoc or technician) you likely do not have access to the larger catalogue of FAS downloads, but can use those listed here https://software.hms.harvard.edu/all-hms-it-software-z. Note if you are transitioning from graduate student to some other role, your access to FAS content may terminate before other IT things (email, etc.,).
Remote Access (VPN)#
For access to fileservers and some software off campus, you will need to set up a VPN. HMS IT has pretty good documentation for this here: https://software.hms.harvard.edu/pulse-secure-vpn-client

Get started with creative cloud here: https://huit.harvard.edu/adobe-creative-cloud This method only requires a harvard key and works for HMS postdocs / staff as well.
HMS#
HMS provides employees and students with a free license here.

HMS provides a free license for Paperpile (a Chrome extension). Here’s how to access the license:
- Navigate to the Paperpile website from your Chrome browser and select the option for a 30 Day Free Trial.
- Login with your personal Google account.
- After installing the Paperpile Extension – you will need to activate the HMS site license under “Settings > Account > Subscription > Activate Site license”. Enter your @hms.harvard.edu email address for verification.
- You should receive a verifications email from Paperpile with the following: “You are eligible to use Paperpile with a site license: Harvard Medical School. Please verify your institutional email address”.

Geneious
For HMS affiliates, follow the instructions on the HMS IT website https://software.hms.harvard.edu/geneious. For use off-campus it requires VPN access first, so be sure to configure that.
Autodesk products#
Students and educators get free access to autodesk products including autocad, inventor, and fusion 360. To get an education account, follow the instructions here: https://www.autodesk.com/support/account/education/students-educators/get-started As students, you should have no problem getting approved. If you find you need documentation as a postdoc or tech, you will simply need to submit a document that fulfills the following requirements:

Here is an example document that has worked for me in the past for getting approved:
