When using these core facilities:
- If you have any questions, especially pertaining to operations which might damage the microscope, please ask a staff member. After hours, don’t hesitate to contact Rachel (home: 617-487-5301).
- If you remove or install objectives on the microscope, do so very carefully. Dropping one of these can destroy it.
- We are charged for every minute you’re logged in (even if you didn’t reserve that time), so don’t forget to log out when you are done.
- We are charged the full time reserved if the reservation is not removed from the calendar 24 hrs. in advance.
- If you are the last user of the day, please shut off the laser according to the facility’s procedures. We will be charged for the whole night if you don’t.
- Do not attempt to use this equipment without registering and getting training by the staff.

- Scheduling is via an online calendar.
- Once you’re upstairs, login to the computer as wilson lab, password: rachel.
- If you need to transfer files to the Neurobiology server, use login name: graphics, password: graphics. Do not use this server for long-term storage. Burn all images to CD (or DVD) after you collect them. Images may be removed from the server without prior notification.
- If you are the last user signed up for that day, it is extremely important to shut down the system:
- Turn off all lasers using the LSM software.
- Shut down the computer.
- Turn off the mercury arc lamp (if on).
- Wait for the laser fan to shut off (about 5-7 min.).
- Turn off the main switch (the “remote” box).
- Check that the key in the 2-photon laser is turned to “standby” and the shutter button light is off (otherwise push that button to turn it off).
- For after-hours access, use our lab key. This key should always be hung on the bulletin board of the last student carrel in the lab bays.
- If you need to burn a CD or DVD at a time when you will not be using the scope or lasers, make sure that Dan Tom knows what you’re doing so he doesn’t charge us.
- To AVOID having to burn media from the confocal room computer when you are not using the scope or lasers, save your data to “Workstation 1”, “Workstation 2”, or “Workstation 3”. These computers are in the network, but are in the adjoining room in Goldenson (#520), and can be accessed at any time for free.
