TTX IS A FEDERALLY REGULATED “SELECT AGENT” AND REQUIRES TRAINING PRIOR TO USE

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)#

We are required to keep a SOP by EH&S, failure to follow the regulations in it may result in us no longer being able to use TTX or (worse) we may be subject to random inspections.

We keep the SOP as a google doc so it can be easily printed and sent:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XUTlD5VZ9RBVUSnxm2s8P6kcZLQbBFMHAn1k1jkMw5I/edit

Try to keep it updated along with any TTX or safety relevant documents in the rest of the lab wiki.

Safety Data Sheet (SDS)#

The Safety Data Sheet is attached (from Cayman Chemical)

TTX Use and Disposal#

Please refer to the SOP in the google doc above. The first version of it is attached as a PDF for reference.

Purchasing and Storage#

All of this information is duplicated from the SOP. Do NOT update something here without also checking if it makes sense to amend the SOP.

Purchase#

We purchase Tetrodotoxin Citrate  in 1mg quantities for reconstitution from Cayman Chemical CO (14964, 1mg), Enzo (BML-NA120-0001, 1mg), or EMD Biosciences (#554412, 1mg). Only reconstitute 1mg at a time to minimize risk. As the stock runs low, purchase additional TTX for reconstitution, but do NOT leave it at 4C for long term storage.

Purchasing records must be stored along with the old inventory forms in the TTX binder located in the file-holder on the side of the refrigerator that has the lockbox. These must be maintained for at least 3 years per the regulations.

Storage#

All TTX is stored in a red lockbox inside of the main lab (WAB 320) refrigerator at 4C. The key is in another part of the lab, ask authorized users for its location.

Logging#

Log all toxin use, reconstitution, and disposal in the TTX binder located in the file-holder on the side of the refrigerator containing the lockbox.. A spreadsheet with the following information is included with fields: Date, User Initials, Initial Amount, Remaining Amount.

All fields MUST be filled out as material is used.
