This is the laser that is split between Berg 3 and Berg 4. It is controlled by a laptop on the Berg 4 rack as of 03/2024.
General#
Model: Mai Tai HP 2040S with DeepSee
Serial: 7056-EV
Service#
Chiller#
The chiller should be set to 21C and maintain this temperature. **If the chiller is not maintaining this temperature then try to 1) bring the room temperature down, and/or 2) clean the chiller using fluids under the sink in WAB 305. The chiller fluid must not be allowed to get too low, and the fluid should be routinely drained and and cleaned (~every 6/months). During draining and cleaning the laser should be off.
Air Filter#
As of 2022 after an upgrade the system uses an air filter and drier that is inside of the driver box on the dolly under the air table (the ’laser box’ on top of the chiller). To access this you will need to remove the screws on the top covering. According to SpectraPhysics if the humidity reaches ~10% we should replace this. In 2024 this was covered by the warranty.

Laptop Configuration#
The laser is exclusively controllable by software that is on a small laptop. To ensure robust behavior follow these settings.
- In the com port used by Mai Tai, navigate to power settings in the device manager, and set the power to never turn off - Eric McArthur 20230106

- Make sure that the notifications settings are set to never because when Windows sends a notification, there is a background program that can disrupt the com port used by the Mai Tai software - Eric McArthur 20230106

- To prevent problems also make sure that the laptop is always plugged in, set to “Never” power off, sleep, or hibernate

Firmware#
Updated by Eric McArthur on 1/6/23 during a remote troubleshooting session to troubleshoot software connection issues.

Troubleshooting#
- If the laser temperature is too high (above 21 C), you must bring the temperature down. This is really bad for the laser and must be addressed immediately. This may also prevent the Mai Tai software from properly communicating with the laser. Check if the chiller fluid needs to be replaced and that the AC unit in the room is working properly.
- If you are having trouble establishing a connection between the laser and the Mai Tai software (for example, turning on the laser using the blue power on button on the GUI), try restarting the laptop and make sure that the laser temperature is at 21 C. If that does not work, turn the laser off for 10-30s using the button on the front panel of the laser and power it back on. Make sure to do this with the cable connecting the laser and the laptop connected.
Issues Log#
- Issues turning on the laser through the Mai Tai software occurred on 8/8/22, 9/16/22, 12/29/22,1/3/23. All these connection issues were resolved by powering the laser off/on as described in the troubleshooting section.
- Contacted Spectra-Physics regarding connections issues in January 2023 and Eric McArthur remotely updated the firmware and some laptop settings on 1/6/23.
- Noticed low Green Adjust value immediately after remote servicing which suggested decreased IR efficiency. Service call by Jian Liu on 1/19/23. He said the main issue with the decreased IR efficiency was that the MaiTai component inside the laser box was out of alignment with the DeapSea compensation component. He aligned the (inside of the) laser, which require a full realignment of Bergs3/4
